Lesson 11 of 11
Nightlife & Bars
DC's nightlife isn't Vegas, but it's deeper than its reputation — world-class music venues, top-50-globally cocktail bars, neighborhood dives, embassy parties, and one of the most influential queer scenes on the East Coast.
Chapter 1
The Music Venues
• 9:30 Club (V Street NW) — opened in its current form in 1996, repeatedly named one of the best music venues in America. Mid-size, perfect sound, no bad sightlines. • The Anthem (The Wharf) — 6,000-cap venue from the same group as 9:30. Opened 2017. Big-name tours, indoor/outdoor. • Black Cat (14th St) — beloved indie/punk venue, key part of DC's hardcore lineage. • Lincoln Theatre & Howard Theatre (U Street) — historic Black Broadway venues, both still booking national acts. • Echostage (NE DC) — one of DJ Mag's top clubs in the world for EDM and hip-hop. • Capital One Arena (Penn Quarter) — Caps, Wizards, and arena tours.
Chapter 2
Cocktail Bars Worth Dressing Up For
• Columbia Room (Shaw) — repeat World's 50 Best Bars list. Tasting-menu cocktails, all reservation. • Silver Lyan (Riggs Hotel, downtown) — Ryan Chetiyawardana's DC outpost, also World's 50 Best. • Service Bar (U Street) — relaxed, exceptional drinks, jerk wings. • The Gibson (14th St) — original speakeasy-revival bar in DC; reservations recommended. • Round Robin Bar (Willard Hotel) — a presidential hangout since the 1850s. Order a mint julep.
Chapter 3
LGBTQ+ Nightlife
DC has one of the most established LGBTQ+ scenes on the East Coast, anchored by the 17th Street NW corridor (Dupont) and 14th Street NW (Logan).
Classics: JR's, Pitchers, Number 9, Trade, Bunker, Uproar. Newer favorites: A League of Her Own (women's bar in Pacific Standard, Adams Morgan/Mt Pleasant), As You Are (Capitol Hill).
Chapter 4
Neighborhood Strips by Vibe
• Adams Morgan (18th Street) — late-night, dive-y, jumbo slice after the bars. • U Street — historic, music-forward, Ethiopian food before the show. • 14th Street NW — date-night restaurants, craft cocktails. • H Street NE (Atlas District) — bars + small venues, easy bar-crawl. • The Wharf — waterfront cocktails, live music at The Anthem and Pearl Street. • Navy Yard — pre/post-game beers, breweries, riverfront patios.
Chapter 5
Local Things to Know
• Last call is usually 1am Sun–Thu, 2am Fri/Sat — sometimes extended to 3am for special weekends. • Go-go is DC's official genre — catch a live show whenever possible (Howard Theatre, Bethesda Blues & Jazz, neighborhood block parties). • Many DC bars have happy hours that are genuinely a deal (oysters $1.50, half-off cocktails, etc.). See the Peek A Spot Explore → Happy Hour list for current ones. • If you want a quieter night out: hotel bars at the Watergate, the Riggs, the Hay-Adams, and the Jefferson are some of the most beautiful rooms in town.
